The 1911-S George V Sovereign is the inaugural year of the George V sovereign series at the Sydney Mint – a first-year issue of a new reign, struck in the opening months of a century that would prove the most turbulent in human history. George V had ascended to the throne following the death of Edward VII in May 1910, and by 1911 the new Mackennal portrait was appearing on sovereigns across the far-flung mints of the British Empire.
