Description

Description

The 1911-S George V Sovereign is the inaugural year of the George V sovereign series at the Sydney Mint – a first-year issue of a new reign, struck in the opening months of a century that would prove the most turbulent in human history. George V had ascended to the throne following the death of Edward VII in May 1910, and by 1911 the new Mackennal portrait was appearing on sovereigns across the far-flung mints of the British Empire. The Sydney Mint’s contribution to that first year carries the particular appeal that attaches to all opening dates, and in PCGS MS63 this coin is not merely a first-year issue in mint state; it is a certified, independently authenticated example whose quality has been assessed and confirmed by the world’s most respected third-party grading service.

Obverse: The left-facing portrait of King George V by Bertram Mackennal, with the legend GEORGIVS V DEI GRA BRITT OMN REX FID DEF IND IMP and the S mintmark for Sydney -the portrait of a new King on the first sovereign his reign produced at this mint.

Reverse: Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon with the date 1911 in the exergue, struck with the full depth of relief and precision that an MS63 example demands and delivers.

Grade: PCGS MS63 Certified mint state by PCGS – the Professional Coin Grading Service – in a sealed, tamper-evident holder with full authentication. At MS63, this coin presents with above-average mint state quality, retaining vibrant and largely unimpaired original mint lustre across both obverse and reverse. The strike is sharp and complete throughout, with all design detail fully rendered and crisp. The fields display the bright, reflective surfaces of a genuinely uncirculated coin, with the scattered and minor contact marks that define the MS63 grade – present but not individually distracting, and entirely consistent with a coin that has never circulated but has experienced careful handling at some point in its long life. The cartwheel bloom of fresh mint lustre is evident and appealing. A most attractive certified mint state example.
