TAA Specimen Banknote Set
In 1982, five men attempted a daring mid-air heist on Trans Australia Airlines (TAA) planes. They hid inside specially constructed crates lined with telephone books, planning to switch out Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) banknotes with the books. The plan went awry when poor ventilation caused one robber trouble breathing.
The flight crew discovered the stowaway, leading to an unexpected turn of events. The Queensland police found a highly organized robbery and apprehended multiple suspects. The crew’s quick actions led to the capture of the stowaways.
On Oct. 21 the following year RBA Governor, R.A. Johnston, made a presentation to each of ten TAA employees involved.
Each of the ten employees received a personally inscribed folder containing specimens of current Commonwealth of Australia bank notes. Each folder contained one specimen of each denomination $1, $2, $5, $10, $20 and $50.
Many of the sets were broken up and the notes were sold individually, this is a complete set presented to C. C. O’Brien number 0014. This set is in it’s original book and in pristine condition.
This is your chance to own such an intriguing part of the Australian Banknote history, this set is extremely rare.
