Description

For most of the world, the koala is Australia distilled into a single image. Soft, grey, improbably round, clinging to the white limbs of a gum tree against a bleached summer sky. But look closer and the animal is stranger and more remarkable than the postcard version suggests. It navigates an almost entirely eucalyptus diet that would be toxic to most mammals, surviving on leaves that offer almost no nutrition and require a highly specialised digestive system to process. Its brain has actually retreated over millennia, leaving a smooth, unfurrowed surface, an evolutionary trade-off that freed up energy for coping with all those toxins. The koala doesn’t need to think quickly. It just needs to hold on.

Ing Ing Jong’s reverse design captures the animal in its element, perched in a eucalyptus tree, a leafy branch held gently in its mouth, native foliage framing the scene with the quiet beauty of the Australian bush. The inscription ‘KOALA’ appears within the design alongside The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, the coin’s weight, purity and 2026 year-date. The obverse carries Dan Thorne’s effigy of His Majesty King Charles III.

Struck in 31.105 grams of 99.99% pure silver and issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, each coin incorporates a micro-laser engraved authentication mark on the reverse, a security detail visible only under magnification. Each is presented in a protective acrylic capsule.
