Description

Description

A full kilogram of 99.99% pure silver is a serious object, one that asks to be noticed, picked up, felt. At 100.90 millimetres across and 14.50 millimetres deep, the Australian Koala 2026 1 Kilo coin is less a piece of currency than a statement of intent.

And what an animal to dedicate it to.

The koala has been part of Australia’s identity for thousands of years, appearing in the stories, language and culture of Aboriginal Australians across the eastern seaboard long before the rest of the world knew it existed. A creature of the high branches, unhurried and self-possessed, perfectly adapted to a landscape that would exhaust almost anything else. It feeds almost exclusively on eucalyptus leaves, selecting specific species from more than seven hundred available, guided by scent and instinct. It barely drinks, drawing moisture from its leaves, the word koala itself thought to derive from a Dharug term meaning no water. It is, in every sense, a creature that has made its peace with the land it lives on.

Ing Ing Jong’s reverse design gives the animal the scale and presence it deserves, a koala settled in its eucalyptus tree, a branch held in its mouth, surrounded by native foliage rendered in satisfying detail across a full hundred millimetres of silver. The inscription ‘KOALA’ sits within the design alongside The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, weight, purity and 2026 year-date. The obverse carries Dan Thorne’s effigy of His Majesty King Charles III.

Unlike the 1oz coin, no mintage cap applies here; production will cease at the end of 2026, after which The Perth Mint will declare the official final figure. Once that date passes, the number is fixed forever. Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, each coin incorporates a micro-laser engraved authentication feature visible only under magnification, and is presented in a protective acrylic capsule.

Available through Jaggards, proud Perth Mint authorised distributor for over 40 years.
