When the colony of New South Wales faced severe coin shortages, Governor Lachlan Macquarie introduced 40,000 Spanish reales, cutting their centres to create the “holey dollar” (outer ring) and the “dump” (inner core). This bold innovation became Australia’s first official currency, shaping its economic heritage.

A Masterpiece in Gold

The reverse design honours the legendary Spanish Pillar Dollar (or “piece of eight”), featuring:

• The Latin motto ‘VTRAQUE’ (both are one) beneath the Spanish Crown, symbolises unity.
• Two hemispheres representing the Old and New Worlds, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, draped with spiralling banners inscribed ‘PLVS VLTRA’ (more beyond).
• The ‘Mo’ mintmark, a nod to Mexico City, where many original Spanish dollars were struck.
• The 2025 year-date, marking this historic anniversary.

The S-shaped banners around the pillars are thought to have inspired the modern ‘$’ symbol, adding a fascinating link to global currency history.
