The Mob of Thirty brings back the original 1993 reverse design by Horst Hahne – the German-born Australian sculptor and former Chief Engraver of the Royal Australian Mint whose single kangaroo caught mid-leap launched one of the world’s most celebrated numismatic series. Thirty years on, that image carries a weight no new design could manufacture.

The Kangaroo Series is built on change – a new design, every year, without exception. That’s precisely what makes this anniversary edition so striking. For the first time in three decades, the Mint looked backward. Over those 30 years, many talented designers have contributed to the program – the Mint collaborated with artists including Ken Done, Reg Mombassa, and renowned Indigenous artists Jeanette Timbery, Mark Node, and Ray Thomas. Returning to Hahne’s founding design is not nostalgia – it’s a statement about how strong that original vision was.

The obverse adds another layer of historical significance. It features Jody Clark’s memorial effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, inscribed with the years of her reign: “1952–2022” – making this one of the final Australian coins to bear her likeness in an anniversary context.
