The 2008 Perth Mint Lunar Mouse marks the very first release in the iconic Australian Lunar Silver Series II. Struck in 1oz of 999 pure silver, it opened a new 12-year chapter in one of the most celebrated coin programs ever produced by the Perth Mint.
The Design
The reverse carries an intricately detailed depiction of a mouse beside a sheaf of wheat, accompanied by the Chinese character for “Mouse” and the inscription “Year of the Mouse.” In Chinese tradition, the Mouse – the first animal of the zodiac – is associated with intelligence, adaptability and prosperity, making this coin especially meaningful as a gift for those born under its sign.
The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the coin’s face value of $1 AUD, weight, purity and year of issue – confirming it as legal tender backed by the Australian government under the Currency Act 1965.
With a maximum mintage of 300,000 – now fully sold out at the Perth Mint – the 2008 Mouse is a key date in the Lunar Series II programme and one of the most sought after first-release coins in the modern Australian numismatic market.
