Description
Struck in the first year of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, this 1953 Australian Half Penny is offered in Choice Uncirculated condition. It exhibits a crisp strike with brilliant original lustre and no signs of handling or wear, making it an outstanding example for type collectors.
The obverse features the young laureate bust of Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse depicts the well-known bounding kangaroo – an enduring emblem of Australia’s national identity. The half penny was the smallest denomination in circulation before decimalisation in 1966. Twenty-four copper half pennies equalled a silver shilling, and 480 were equivalent to one pound. This piece is composed of 97% copper, 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin.
