Description
Struck to mark the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, this 1953 Australian Half Penny is offered in Choice Uncirculated condition. It displays a sharp strike with full original lustre and outstanding eye appeal, free from any signs of wear or handling.
The obverse features the young laureate bust of Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse shows the bounding kangaroo – one of the most recognisable designs in Australian coinage. The half penny was the smallest denomination in circulation before decimalisation in 1966. Twenty-four copper half pennies equalled a silver shilling, and 480 were required to make one pound. This coin is composed of 97% copper, 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin.
