Description
The 1929P carries two points of significance. It is the first year of the revised “small head” portrait of King George V – a second, modified effigy by Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal that replaced the earlier bust and was used for the final years of Perth Mint sovereign production from 1929 to 1931. And it arrives near the end of the story: by 1929, sovereign production had contracted to just three branch mints worldwide – Perth, Melbourne and Pretoria. Two years later, Perth struck its last sovereign. The era was almost over.
The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon, unchanged since 1817. The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark sits above the date. Mackennal’s initials “BM” appear at the truncation of the King’s neck on the obverse.
Contains 7.98 grams of 22-carat gold.
