Description
A genuine gold sovereign struck at the Perth Mint in 1917 – uncirculated, over a century old, and still sharp.
The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St George and the Dragon, with the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark above the date. The obverse bears King George V by Australian sculptor Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal. 1917 was the centenary year of the Pistrucci design and the third year of the First World War; a large proportion of the sovereigns minted were subsequently melted or shipped overseas to settle wartime debt.
Composed of 7.98 grams of 22-carat gold.
