Description
The 1914M King George V Gold Sovereign is a distinguished example of British imperial coinage, minted at the Melbourne Mint during the early years of King George V’s reign.
Struck in 22 carat gold (91.67% pure) and weighing approximately 7.98 grams, the coin features Benedetto Pistrucci’s renowned St George and the dragon design on the reverse – a symbol of strength and tradition that has adorned sovereigns for generations. The obverse bears the bare-headed effigy of King George V with the legend ‘GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP.’
The ‘M’ mintmark, located just above the year on the reverse, indicates that this coin was produced at the Melbourne Mint, one of three Australian branches authorised to strike sovereigns on behalf of the British Empire. Coins from this mint carry particular historical interest due to their colonial context and limited mintages compared to their London counterparts.
This example is offered in uncirculated condition, showcasing well preserved surfaces, crisp detail, and a strong original strike.
