Description
The 1897S Veil Head Half Sovereign arrives in a year of profound imperial celebration – 1897 marked Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, sixty years on the throne and the apotheosis of British imperial confidence. The Sydney Mint struck this coin at the very height of that celebratory year, producing a small gold piece that carries within it the weight of an era drawing toward its close. Victoria had just four years left to reign, and the Old Head portrait that appears on this coin – introduced in 1893 and sometimes called the Veil Head or Widow Head – would accompany her to the end.
Obverse: The Old Head portrait of Queen Victoria by Thomas Brock, depicting the aged Queen in widow’s veil and small crown — a portrait of striking solemnity and considerable artistry — with the legend VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP and the S mintmark for Sydney.
Reverse: The crowned shield reverse design used on Australian half sovereigns of this period, with the quartered royal arms within a decorated shield and the date 1897 below — a heraldic composition of quiet authority that complements the gravitas of the Old Head obverse.
