Description

The 1892S Jubilee Head Sovereign is a coin of considerable distinction – struck at the Sydney Mint in the fifth year of the Jubilee Head coinage and just three years before the introduction of the Old Head portrait that would close the Victorian sovereign series.

Obverse: The Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria by Joseph Edgar Boehm, introduced in 1887 to mark the Golden Jubilee, depicting the Queen wearing a small crown and veil with the legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA and the S mintmark denoting Sydney.

Reverse: Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon, with the date 1892 in the exergue – struck with the full sharpness that only an uncirculated coin can display.

Grade: Uncirculated (UNC) A coin that has never passed through commerce. Both sides retain full, vibrant mint lustre with the cartwheel bloom characteristic of a freshly struck sovereign. The portrait of Victoria is razor sharp across all detail – the veil, the crown, and the legend – while the reverse presents St George and the dragon in exceptional relief, the lance, horse musculature, and dragon scales all fully struck and unimpaired. The fields are clean and reflective, free of wear, friction, or contact marks of any significance. A coin of this quality for this date is a genuinely rare thing.
