The 1887M Jubilee Head Sovereign is one of the most historically charged coins in the entire Australian sovereign series. This is the inaugural year of the Jubilee Head portrait type – introduced across the British and Australian sovereign series to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee of 1887, the fiftieth anniversary of her accession – and the Melbourne Mint’s contribution to that momentous first year carries all the significance and collector appeal that an opening date of a new portrait type commands.

Obverse: The Jubilee Head portrait of Queen Victoria by Joseph Edgar Boehm, depicting the crowned and veiled Queen in a markedly more mature representation than the Young Head portrait it replaced, with the legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA and the M mintmark for Melbourne – a portrait that divides opinion among collectors but carries an undeniable historic gravitas as the image chosen to mark the most celebrated anniversary of the longest reign in British history to that point.

Reverse: Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon with the date 1887 in the exergue, presented here in the full depth of relief and absolute sharpness of strike that only a coin untouched by circulation can display – every element of the composition fully rendered and undisturbed.
