Description
One of the earliest and most elusive dates in the Australian half sovereign series, struck in the seventh year of the Sydney Mint’s operation, when half sovereign production remained very modest. A Good Very Fine example of the 1862 is an exceptional survivor – most examples of this date that circulated in colonial commerce wore far beyond this grade before leaving service, and problem-free examples above Fine are rarely encountered.
Obverse: Young Head of Queen Victoria by William Wyon, VICTORIA D G BRITT REG F D, within a milled border.
Reverse: The distinctive Sydney Mint Australian reverse – AUSTRALIA beneath a St Edward’s Crown within a banksia wreath, SYDNEY MINT above and ONE SOVEREIGN below.
Grade: Light, even wear on the higher relief points, all secondary detail fully present and well defined. Legend complete and sharp, milled border intact, fields clean and original.
