Description
The 1861 Sydney Mint Sovereign in Good Very Fine condition is a coin of considerable rarity and historical resonance. By 1861 the Sydney Mint had been operating for six years, its purpose forged in the extraordinary circumstances of the gold rush and its output feeding a colonial economy of growing sophistication and confidence. The American Civil War had just begun, the colony of New South Wales was prospering, and the sovereign was the currency of commerce across a society that was rapidly maturing from frontier outpost to established colonial power. Annual sovereign production at the Sydney Mint in the early 1860s remained modest by the standards of later decades, and the combination of low original mintage, genuine age, and the natural attrition of 160 years has made the 1861 a date that serious collectors of the series pursue with purpose. In Good Very Fine the coin presents with a quality of preservation that places it well above the circulated norm and makes it a genuinely exceptional survivor.
Obverse: The laureate young head of Queen Victoria by William Wyon, with the legend VICTORIA D G BRITT REG F D encircling the portrait within a milled border – the Young Head portrait retaining a clarity and definition across the facial features, hair, and crown detail that speaks to limited circulation and careful preservation across more than sixteen decades.
Reverse: Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon with the date 1861 in the exergue – the horse, rider, lance, and dragon all clearly and crisply defined, the composition presenting with a sharpness and depth of relief that rewards close examination and distinguishes this coin immediately from the worn examples that make up the bulk of the surviving 1861 population.
Grade: Good Very Fine (GVF)
