Description
The 1859 Sydney Mint Half Sovereign is a coin of profound rarity that sits in the earliest and most challenging reaches of the Australian half sovereign series. Struck in only the fourth year of the Sydney Mint’s operation, this coin was produced at a time when the mint was still finding its productive rhythm and the colony of New South Wales was living through the tail end of the gold rush that had called the mint into existence in the first place.
Obverse: The laureate young head of Queen Victoria by William Wyon, with the legend VICTORIA D G BRITT REG F D encircling the portrait within a milled border – the Young Head portrait retaining a sharpness and definition across the facial features, crown, and legend that speaks to genuinely light circulation and careful subsequent preservation across more than sixteen decades.
Reverse: The crowned shield reverse design used on Australian half sovereigns of this period, with the quartered royal arms presented within a decorated shield and the date 1859 below – the date bold and fully legible, the shield devices clearly and crisply present, and the heraldic detail well preserved in a way that only a Very Fine example of this age can deliver.
Grade: Very Fine (VF)
