Description
The 1856 Sydney Mint Half Sovereign is among the most historically significant coins in the entire Australian series – struck in only the second year of the Sydney Mint’s operation, just one year after the mint opened its doors in 1855 to process the extraordinary gold output of the New South Wales fields. As a first-decade Sydney Mint issue and one of the earliest Australian half sovereigns ever produced, the 1856 occupies a position of genuine importance in the story of Australian coinage, regardless of the condition in which any individual example presents. This particular coin carries damage that places it firmly in the category of a type filler – acquired not for its own grade or surface quality, but for what it fundamentally is: a genuine, original example of one of the rarest and most historically resonant issues in Australian numismatics.
Obverse: The laureate young head of Queen Victoria by William Wyon, with the legend VICTORIA D G BRITT REG F D – worn and in places affected by damage, but the portrait and its colonial origin are unmistakable.
Reverse: The crowned shield reverse with the quartered royal arms and the date 1856 below – the date legible and the coin’s identity beyond question despite the condition of the surfaces.
Grade: Very Good — Damaged (Type Filler) This coin is offered with full transparency as a damaged example. The underlying wear is consistent with a Very Good grade – even, all-over circulation wear with the major design elements present and the date fully legible – but damage is present that prevents it from being graded or valued as a problem-free coin. The nature of the damage is honestly reflected in the price, which represents a meaningful reduction from what a clean Very Good example of this date would command. For the collector whose primary objective is to represent this date and type in a collection, rather than to acquire the finest possible surface quality, this coin serves that purpose entirely.
