Description

Description

The 1856 Sydney Mint Half Sovereign in Good Very Fine condition is, without overstatement, one of the most significant offerings in Australian colonial numismatics. This is the second year of issue from Australia’s first mint, struck just one year after the Sydney Mint opened in 1855, and as such, it stands among the earliest Australian gold coins ever produced. The half sovereign denomination was never struck in the volumes of the full sovereign, and the first-decade Sydney Mint issues exist today in populations so small that even Fine examples are a noteworthy find. A Good Very Fine example of the 1856 is a coin that defies the odds of 170 years of circulation, loss, and attrition in a way that demands the full attention of every serious collector of Australian colonial gold.

Obverse: The laureate young head of Queen Victoria by William Wyon, with the legend VICTORIA D G BRITT REG F D encircling the portrait within a milled border, fresh and well-defined for a coin of this extraordinary age, the portrait retaining a clarity and presence that speaks to very limited circulation.

Reverse: The crowned shield reverse design used on Australian half sovereigns of this period, with the quartered royal arms within a decorated shield and the date 1856 below, the date bold and fully legible, the shield devices clearly present and the heraldic detail well preserved for an issue of this vintage and rarity.

Grade: Good Very Fine (GVF)
