Perth Mint Australian Lunar Series III: 2027 Year of the Goat

The 2027 Year of the Goat marks the eighth release in The Perth Mint’s Australian Lunar Series III, the twelve coin program that began in 2020 with the Year of the Mouse and concludes in 2031. Fittingly, the Goat is also the eighth animal of the Chinese zodiac, associated with calm, gentleness, artistry and a quiet perseverance. Struck in 99.99% pure gold, 99.99% pure silver and 99.95% platinum, the release continues one of the most widely collected bullion series in the world.

Jaggards is an official Perth Mint distributor and has traded Australian coinage from Sydney since 1963. Our 2027 Goat range spans fractional gold from 1/20oz through to 10oz, silver from 1/2oz to the 1 kilo, and the 1oz platinum. Every coin arrives in its original Perth Mint capsule.

Mintage Limits and Why They Matter

The commercial character of the lunar series rests on its mintage discipline. The 1oz gold Goat is capped at 30,000 coins worldwide and the 1oz silver at 300,000, figures that have held across recent Series III releases and that are modest by international bullion standards. Larger formats such as the 2oz and 10oz gold are struck to demand rather than a fixed cap, which is why the 1oz sizes tend to carry the strongest secondary premiums as a year sells through.

Because the design changes every year and is never repeated within a series, each release becomes a closed edition the moment the mint stops striking it. Earlier Goat years illustrate the pattern: the 2015 Series II Goat and the 2003 Series I Goat both trade well above their original issue premiums today. Lunar years also arrive with genuine cultural demand behind them, particularly across Asian markets, where the coins are bought as gifts through the Lunar New Year period.

Design, Purity and Specifications

The 2027 reverse was created by Perth Mint designers Daniel Thorne and Natasha Muhl, and carries the Goat motif alongside the Chinese character for the animal, the inscription “Year of the Goat” and The Perth Mint’s traditional P mintmark.

The 1oz gold coin is struck in 99.99% pure gold to a diameter of 32.60mm with a face value of 100 Australian dollars. The 1oz silver measures 40.90mm with a 1 dollar face value, and the 2oz gold carries a 200 dollar face value at 41.10mm. All coins are Australian legal tender under the Currency Act 1965, guaranteed for weight and purity by the government of Western Australia, which makes them straightforward to sell anywhere in the world.

Australian investors should also note that these coins qualify as investment grade bullion at 99.5% purity or higher for gold and 99.9% for silver, so they are GST free in Australia.

Why Buy Your Lunar Coins from Jaggards?

Jaggards has bought and sold precious metals from Sydney since 1963, and three generations of Australian collectors have used us to build and eventually sell their holdings. Every 2027 Goat coin we supply comes direct from The Perth Mint in its original capsule and mint issued packaging, untouched and fully inspected before dispatch. Because we make a two way market, we will also quote to buy your lunar coins back, which matters far more at the point of sale than it does on the day you buy. Our team can be reached on 02 9230 0886, or you can meet us in person at Level 8, 74 Pitt Street in the Sydney CBD to view stock before committing. Larger holdings can be delivered securely and discreetly, or held in professional storage through Jaggards Secure Vaulting Service rather than at home. New lunar releases sell through quickly in the popular sizes, so register your interest with us now and we will contact you the moment our 2027 Goat allocation lands.

FAQs

When are the 2027 Year of the Goat coins released?

The Perth Mint typically releases each lunar year during September of the preceding year, so the 2027 Goat becomes available from late 2026. Register your interest with Jaggards and we will contact you when allocations arrive.

What is the mintage of the 2027 Goat lunar coins?

The 1oz gold is limited to 30,000 coins and the 1oz silver to 300,000 coins worldwide. Several larger gold and silver formats are struck to demand rather than a fixed maximum. Current mintage details are listed on each product page.

Are Perth Mint lunar coins a good investment?

Lunar coins offer both the underlying metal value and a numismatic premium driven by annual design changes, capped mintages and strong collector demand. They are not a substitute for standard bullion, but sold out lunar years have historically traded above generic bullion of the same weight.

How does Series III differ from Series I and Series II?

Series I ran from 1996 to 2007, Series II from 2008 to 2019, and Series III from 2020 to 2031. Each series uses fresh designs and a different range of sizes and finishes, with Series III offering the widest choice of gold, silver and platinum formats to date.
