Description
Issued in the first year of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, this 1953 Australian Half Penny is offered in Uncirculated condition. It features a sharp strike with original mint lustre and no signs of wear, making it an excellent early Elizabethan issue.
The obverse displays the young laureate bust of Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse features the iconic bounding kangaroo – an enduring symbol of Australia’s national identity. The half penny was the smallest denomination in circulation before decimalisation in 1966. Twenty-four copper half pennies equalled a silver shilling, and 480 made up one pound. This coin was struck from an alloy of 97% copper, 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin.
